Folsom Lake is a reservoir on the American River in the Sierra Nevada foothills of California It is located within Placer, El Dorado, and Sacramento Counties. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is located about 25 miles east of Sacramento, can be reached via either Highway 50 or I-80. Both Folsom Lake and Lake Natoma have many access points and entrances. The administrative offices are located at the base of Folsom Dam at the corner.
The lake is about 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Sacramento. The lake surface area is 11,500 acres (4,700 ha), its elevation is 466 ft (142 m), and it has 75 mi (121 km) of undulated shoreline. Folsom Lake with its surrounding Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most visited parks in the California park system.
The park has multiple entrances most of which are fairly easily accessed by either Interstate 80 to Douglas Blvd.(east), or Highway 50 to Hazel Ave., or Folsom Blvd., (north).
Folsom Lake waters hold trout, catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, perch, and kokanee salmon. An accessible fishing pier is available on Lake Natoma at the Nimbus Flat park entrance. TNG Guide Service is the only permitted concessionaire on the Lake.
Folsom Lake Marina, which is one of the largest inland marinas in California, is located in Browns Ravine at Folsom Lake State Recreational Area. It is the only marina on Folsom Lake and is open year-round.
Though the Browns Ravine is operated by a concessionaire, it is still part of the State Park and all State Park fees apply. The entrance station into Browns has a self pay box for the times that no one is at the station. State Annual Passes are sold at the marina office, both during the week and on weekends. The marina office will accept Credit Cards.
